AFIR makes ISO 15118 mandatory in the EU

Compliance deadlines apply from 2026

Regulatory context – AFIR

The EU Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (EU 2025/656) sets binding technical requirements for EV charging infrastructure deployed in the EU with the following milestones.  Non-compliant charging points cannot be placed on the EU market after these dates.

January 8, 2026 - ISO 15118-2
Mandatory for all newly installed or refurbished publicly accessible AC and DC charging points in the EU

January 1, 2027 - ISO 15118-20

Mandatory for all newly installed or refurbished public and private charging points, including wallboxes and private infrastructure in the EU

ISO context – latest Amendments
EXIcodec supports ISO 15118-2 and ISO 15118-20 including the latest amendments. Future updates are continuously incorporated and delivered as part of the commercial license — no in-house tracking of standards revisions required.

As ISO 15118 becomes mandatory, compliant EXI encoding becomes a core technical requirement.

EXIcodec in the ISO 15118 communication stack

EXIcodec provides EXI encoding and decoding based on the ISO 15118‑2 and ISO 15118‑20 schema definitions. It integrates exclusively at the presentation layer and does not constitute a full ISO 15118 stack.

The solution is designed for embedded and resource‑constrained targets and is delivered as a reusable EXI library that can be applied across multiple standards.

Beyond ISO 15118
EXI encoding applies wherever XML is exchanged. We implement schema support for additional XML-based standards on request , from automotive to smart grid and industrial protocols.
